Shark when diving in Komodo

A responsible diver should take several steps to safeguard himself and the sharks. But don’t worry, there are only a few simple things you can do to make it the best experience possible for you.

Here are a few sharks that can be seen while diving around the Komodo islands and can provide an unforgettable experience.

The Whitetip Reef Sharks

Whitetip reef sharks can be found in a variety of dive sites all across Komodo. Siaba Besar, Siaba Kecil, Mawan, Tatawa Besar, Batu Bolong, Manta Point, and Pengah Kecil are Komodo central locations. These sharks are most commonly seen in the north of Komodo, at Castle or Crystal Rock, where they can be seen everywhere!

Because the whitetip reef shark is a nocturnal animal, you will see them hunting at night. So don’t be concerned if you dive with them during the day! The whitetip reef shark can reach a maximum length of 1.6 metres. The heaviest shark ever recorded is 18.3kg.

The Blacktip Reef Sharks

Blacktip reef sharks are discovered on fewer dive sites in Komodo than whitetip reef sharks. These sharks can be found in Tatawa Besar, Mawan, Manta Point, and Cauldron.

The blacktip reef shark is an intriguing creature because it is quite shy. As a result, it’s best to keep a safe distance and allow them to approach you. They can be found in the Indo-Pacific in shallow waters near the surface of reefs.

The Bamboo Sharks

Bamboo sharks can only be found in two Komodo dive sites. They can be found at Manta Point and Crystal Rock. The bamboo shark is a rare shark found only in Indonesia’s coastal areas. So, if swimming with a bamboo shark is the dream, a trip to Komodo National Park is in order!

The Grey Reef Sharks

The grey reef shark is the giant shark you will encounter in Komodo. Unless you’re fortunate and some more giant sharks pass through! These sharks have been spotted in Komodo, near Castle or Crystal Rock. These sharks have also been spotted in Batu Bolong, Central Komodo.

A grey reef shark has an enormous size, a rounded nose, and large eyes. These sharks usually swim slowly but can reach speeds of up to 25mph when hunting!
